Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, also sometimes called minimally invasive surgery, is a technique that requires small incisions to be made in the abdomen to accommodate a thin camera or laparoscope and thin instuments such as graspers, scissors and clip applier.  The advantage to laparoscopic surgery versus an open surgery or laparotomy are:

  • Shorter recovery time
  • Reduced pain and swelling
  • Reduced bleeding
  • Less chance of infection
  • Smaller, sometimes barely visible, scars

Because every patient and situation is unique, the surgeons at Ramapo Valley Surgical Associates will meet with their patients before scheduling surgery to determine what the best course of treatment will be.

Some diseases that may be treated laparoscopically:

  • Appendicitis
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Hernias
  • Colon disease
